The Basso Profundo Freenotes are the result of 15 years of experience in building resonated deep bass instruments using both aluminum and wood bars. The critical factor in attaining profound sound volume in this range is sizing the resonators and bars for the long waves of these frequencies. The Basso Profundo uses 15 inch diameter resonators and 10 inch wide aluminum bars, with a resonator aperture constriction to ten inches which accentuates the fundamental pitch of these massive instruments.
These instruments were developed in late 2006, and have been used in concerts in New York, Japan, and Santa Cruz California, by the Paul Winter Consort and John Schneider's Microfest performing the music of Harry Partch. The results in these events were deeply satisfying to performers and audience alike. They have also been used in a CD recording of Lou Harrison's Suite for Violin and American Gamelan, by the Fort Lewis College percussion ensemble "Woodworks," who will also be using them in a fall 2007 concert tour culminating in a performance at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in October.
The Basso Profundo are professional grade instruments in every sense of the word. They can be commissioned for $450.00 each, and they have a range from A-55 hz. to A-110. Mallets for the Basso Profundo are equally massive. They are priced at $50.00 each.
